One of the most important mandates of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is to promote equitable access to university and college education. This is achieved through, among other things, overseeing the placement of government-sponsored students to Universities and Colleges. The KUCCPS board considers the analysis of the KCSE examination results and the maximum available capacities in Kenyan universities and colleges.
The placement board also establishes the criteria for the selection of students for various courses. One of the best things about this board is that it offers equal opportunities to both male and female applicants. This is important especially since inequalities still exist in the education sector and the job market. One of the sectors affected by inequalities is technology. It thus validates the various efforts to encourage girls to consider taking up technology courses. At the moment, more men are taking up technology and engineering courses and while there are several inspiring women shaping the tech space, the number of girls is still low.
Part of the problem could be the belief that technology and other STEM courses are a male space. Organizations such as Akirachix are working hard to encourage women to take up technology courses. Such courses are important and need support from governments and other stakeholders.
A probable reason for the low uptake of STEM courses among women could be lack of awareness. Some women may not be aware of the existence of numerous ICT courses and options. The sections below highlights degree, diploma, and certificate IT courses as per the KUCCPS programmes:
