GOtv Kenya is among the biggest players in a pay tv market that has attracted several players since digital migration came into effect. The service is a subsidiary of Multichoice which also happens to be the mother company of the DStv, another digital satellite TV service.

Since its launch in 2016, GOtv Kenya continues to increase its subscription numbers despite the mounting competition. However, the pay tv service has made adjustments to its prices on several occasions.

Mounting competition is believed to be among the key factors that have pushed the price changes. One such adjustment was evidenced in August 2016 and most recently in early 2018.

The price of the GOtv decoder has also changed over time. At present, the price of a decoder stands at Ksh. 1,999, or Ksh. 2k if charm pricing does not excite you. This comes with a one-month free GOtv Max subscription and you only renew once this period elapses.

Top 8 GOtv questions answered

1. How can I change a GOtv package (upgrade or downgrade)?

The first way to change your GOtv package is through an SMS. This is a Short Message Service (SMS). What you do is basically send an SMS ‘UPGRADE IUC NUMBER’ to 22688, or call customer care and request for an upgrade.

Another way is through the Eazy Self Service option.

Here’s how;

1. Log-on to eazy.gotvafrica.com – You will need your Surname/mobile and IUC number to log in
2. Head over to the Eazy Self Service and on the drop-down button will present you with several options; Click on “Change my package”
3. This will take you to a window showing your current package and other packages you can opt for.
4. Click on the package you want and proceed to choose the payment option. Make payments and follow the remaining prompts to complete the process.

Note: If you have an active subscription, wait for the active subscription to expire otherwise it won’t work.

Once you pay the set amount for your preferred package, get in touch with a customer care agent for assistance (through their official communication channels).

They will require your IUC number (Your IUC number, or Identification User Code, is the number on the red sticker under your decoder)

2. How can I clear the E-30 and E-16 Error message on my GOTv decoder?

Always ensure that your decoder is powered on when clearing error codes. You will need your IUC number.

Head over to the Eazy Self Service on the main menu and select “Fix errors” on the drop-down menu. Enter your IUC number and select the error you wish to fix: either E-16 or E-30. Click “Fix error”.

Alternatively;

To clear E-16 Error Message, SMS ‘RESET‘ IUC NUMBER’ to 22688 – the IUC number is the number on the red sticker while 22688 is GOTV Kenya shortcode.

3. My tv says “no signal” but everything is plugged in. Also, it shows a e48-32 error message, how do I clear this error?

First, check on your signal levels. To do this go to (Menu> Information Central> Signal Strength/Quality)

If the signal strength is below 90% and quality below 100%, you will need to check on the connections behind your decoder. Ensure that the cable coming directly from the antennae to your decoder is tightly screwed in to the RF in port. If the issue persists, adjust your aerial to a higher more secure position. Re-scan then let me know how it goes.

4. How do I carry out automatic scanning?

Here are the steps:

• Press Menu on your remote
• Select advanced options
• Select installation
• Select tuning
• Select automatic scan.

5. How do I stop automatic scanning on my GOtv whenever I power it on?

Note that the auto scan is part of the decoder initialization. It enables the decoder to scan any lost channels or updates during the switched off mode.

6. Can I get GOtv for free?

No. GOtv is a pay-tv service.

The closest alternative to this is the Free to Air (FTA) which will be required you to pay Ksh. 1,500 renewable annually. In short, just subscribe to the GOtv Lite annual plan.

7. My GOtv channels have ‘scratches’

To resolve this, rescan your decoder. To do this, press on the remote Menu> advanced option > installation>reset > ok. First time installation> language English> Country Kenya> antenna power off. Leave the decoder to scan.

2. On the right corner, you will see a ‘sign in’ option. Click on it and enter the requested details – Surname/mobile number and IUC number.
