Kenyan Girls behind i-Cut among finalists for prestigious Sakharov Prize

Summary:

  • The five girls are from Kisumu Girls High
  • They developed the i-cut, a mobile app that can fight FGM
  • They are among finalists for the prestigious European Sakharov Prize 2019
  • The prize will be awarded in December 2019

‘The Restorers’, an exceptional group of five students from Kisumu Girls High is in the spotlight for all the right reasons. Again!

This time, the group was selected to be among the finalist for the prestigious European Sakharov Prize 2019. The prize is awarded by the European parliament.

The i-Cut app allows young women to seek medical and legal aid before or after forcibly undergoing FGM. It is also through this innovation that this group grabbed Google’s attention.

Google was quite impressed by the innovation that it invited the girls to visit their headquarters in California.

In 2017, ‘The Restorers’ beat nine other semifinalists to become the only Africans selected to participate in the 2017 international Technovation Challenge. A competition sponsored by Google, Verizon, and the United Nations. They were the only representatives from Africa.

The Sakharov Prize is awarded to exceptional individuals and organizations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The app’s interface has five buttons with the options help, rescue, report, information on FGM’ and donate and feedback.
