Women in STEM – Stand up and be counted

What is the problem?

African communities are still continually plagued with issues that range from socio economic deprivation, AIDS/HIV, household chores, early marriage and child labor, steeped cultural/traditional views that impede a girl’s right to education.

Despite an increased number of women going to university, there is still a limited number of young women taking courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.

The STEM fields are still primarily dominated by men, despite women being highly capable of participating in the global innovation that is occurring in technology fields.

Girls are discouraged by family and society at large even before they start, with a large number being unable to finish school due to financial constraints amongst other challenges.

Important factors in STEM

Two key factors in the pursuit of STEM course are (1) personal capabilities and preparedness to succeed; and (2) desire to pursue that discipline.

It is therefore imperative that to attract and retain more women in STEM fields that institutions address both those components.

The importance of Increasing women in STEM

Women STEM practitioners, serve as the role models, ambassadors, and gatekeepers of their respective fields, and as such, potential newcomers assess them when deciding if they want to join the community.

Visibility of women role models in STEM and awareness of successes and achievements of women in STEM goes a long way in inspiring and encouraging young women interested in and pursuing STEM courses.
